Mortal Kombat 4 is the fourth installment in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series, developed by Midway Games and released in 1997 for arcades. The Game Boy Color version was developed by Digital Eclipse and released in 1998.
The GBC version of Mortal Kombat 4 was designed to run on the limited hardware of the Game Boy Color. Therefore, the game was converted to 2D graphics instead of 3D like other versions. The game also features a smaller number of characters, with only 9 playable characters: Raiden, Quan Chi, Fujin, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Reiko, Tanya, Scorpion, and the hidden character Reptile.
The game retains the fighting mechanics of previous versions, with basic, special, and Fatality attacks. However, some Fatalities have been changed or cut due to hardware limitations.
The game’s graphics are designed in the traditional 2D style of Mortal Kombat. The characters and environments are drawn in sharp detail. However, due to hardware limitations, the game does not have as many special effects as other versions.
The GBC version of Mortal Kombat 4 is well-reviewed, with an average score of 75% on the Metacritic website. Critics praised the game’s graphics and sound but criticized its lack of characters and Fatality.
